Myths and Truths about the Legal Use of Marijuana in Ohio

Myths and Truths about the Legal Use of Marijuana in Ohio
February 09, 2024

In November 2023, the citizens of Ohio passed a law that legalized marijuana. While it is now legal to use and grow marijuana, there are a lot of myths circulating as well as important rules and safety tips that Ashland’s community members need to be aware of.

What does marijuana legalization mean for the average citizen of Ashland?

The law as written allows for anyone over the age of 21 to have 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower and 15 grams of extract.

Right now, there are no authorized sellers in Ohio. According to the Ohio Capital Journal, “The Division of Cannabis Control isn’t set to start processing retailer applications until June, which means you likely won’t be able to legally buy marijuana until late summer or early fall.”

You also can’t order marijuana or marijuana products, or buy marijuana in Michigan because federal law prohibits both ordering through the mail and transporting marijuana across state lines.

There are some proposed changes to the law that was passed in November, so stay tuned to local news media for additional clarification as well as rules and regulation changes related to how many plants can be grown on your own property, where you can smoke, who can sell it, and more. (The most recent information available for this article came from the Ohio Capital Journal’s story in December.)

What You Need to Know about Marijuana Usage: Myths vs. Reality

Myth: Anyone Can Use Marijuana Anywhere

Weed smoking is supposed to follow the same rules as cigarettes, which means that you cannot smoke in indoor public places. As of the writing of this article, however, the Senate is still debating what is considered “indoor public places,” and more clarification is needed. Regardless, no, you cannot use marijuana anywhere you want.

Myth: Marijuana Is Completely Harmless

While marijuana has therapeutic benefits, it is not entirely without risks. Long-term and heavy use can have adverse effects on your mental health and may impair cognitive function.

Myth: You Can Smoke and Drive

This is absolutely not true. Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal and dangerous, just like driving under the influence of alcohol. Marijuana use can impair your coordination, delay your reaction time, and make your judgment hazy.

Myth: You Can’t Get Addicted to Marijuana

Although the likelihood is generally lower compared with other substances, it is possible to develop an addiction to marijuana. Long-term and heavy use can lead to physical and psychological dependence.

Key Safety Tips for Ashland Community Members

  • Just like other substances, marijuana should be kept out of reach of children.
  • There are still potential changes to come regarding the details of the law in Ohio. If you are considering using marijuana, be aware of the legal age, the amount you can possess, and where it can be consumed.
  • You should never drive under the influence or operate machinery while using marijuana.
  • Know your personal limits and use responsibly.
